Chemical Absorbers
Chemical sunscreens (containing active ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, and octocrylene) function by absorbing high-energy UV radiation, causing an electron to jump to a higher energy state. As the electron returns to its ground state, it releases the energy as low-level, harmless heat.
Pros: Highly elegant cosmetically, virtually invisible on all skin tones, and resistant to sweating. Cons: Can cause contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Recent FDA trials have also shown systemic absorption into the bloodstream, though the clinical significance of this remains under active investigation.
Physical (Mineral) Blockers
Mineral filters (Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide) are inorganic compounds that sit on the stratum corneum, reflecting and scattering UV rays away from the skin like microscopic mirrors.
Pros: Excellent for sensitive, rosacea-prone, or pediatric skin. They are photostable and provide immediate protection upon application. Cons: Prone to leaving a white cast, especially on melanin-rich skin, though micronized formulations and tinted options have significantly improved cosmetic elegance.
