Signs of Early Burnout

Burnout is not merely a psychological state of being 'tired of work'; it is a clinically measurable physiological condition resulting from prolonged activation of the sympathetic nervous system. It represents the final stage of HPA (Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal) axis dysfunction.
The Cortisol Curve
In a healthy individual, cortisol spikes in the morning to induce wakefulness and tapers off by evening. In early burnout, this curve flattens. Patients often experience 'tired but wired' syndrome—exhausted all day, yet hit with a surge of anxious energy at 10 PM, making sleep impossible.
Cognitive Biomarkers
Chronic exposure to high cortisol is profoundly neurotoxic to the hippocampus, the brain's center for memory and learning. The earliest clinical signs of burnout are not physical exhaustion, but cognitive: a sudden inability to multitask, word-finding difficulties, and severe working memory deficits.
Somatic Symptoms
The brain and body keep the score. Unexplained gastrointestinal distress, tension headaches, and increased susceptibility to upper respiratory infections are hallmark signs that the immune system is being suppressed by chronic stress. Recovery requires structural changes to lifestyle, boundary setting, and rigorous rest protocols, not just a weekend off.
